Side Effects of Oregano Oil

Oregano VulgareEssential oregano oil is highly concentrated. A little goes a very long way toward the results a person, in tandem with his doctor, hopes to achieve. For oregano oil, a few drops and short-term treatment are usually enough. Most side effects are a result of accidental misuse–either taking too much of the oil at one time or extending a recommended treatment program beyond its limits.

Oregano oil can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb iron. For this reason, and because the essential oil can promote blood flow and weaken the uterine lining, pregnant women are advised not to use it. Oil of oregano is a relative of the mint family (read more about peppermint oil). Those who are allergic to mint, thyme, basil or sage may experience nausea, vomiting or skin problems. Should these symptoms develop, the use of the oil should be stopped immediately and should be followed by a doctor’s consultation.
